“The night sky was filled with more stars than you’ve ever seen, and we’ve all thought that this is exactly where videogames would go, videogames that contained the whole universe, and you’d be able to visit it all.”

I had heard the stories. I read some of the articles about it’s grandiose promises and its underwhelming release. I never thought much of it back in 2016, I was busy playing other games and frankly wasn’t surprised that yet another game was not sticking the landing on release. Admittedly No Man’s Sky sounded AMAZING in concept but maybe a little hard to believe.
Between then and now my gaming life (and to degree my personal life as well) belonged to Destiny 2. My best friend from high school and I sold our souls to Bungie and went along for the roller coaster ride that is one of the most popular and longstanding live service games ever. Over time I have developed a love/hate relationship with the game but still think fondly of it.
Almost 10 years later I am in a different place in my life. I have two kids under 5 and I am making moves in my career, taking on new territory as a team supervisor (a big first for me). I can’t play games like I used to. I don’t even enjoy them the same way to be honest. My mother never let me play violent shooters when I was younger so I don’t have the years of built up precision and muscle memory that other gamers my age might have. Add to that the degradation of reflexes from age and it makes a lot of sense why my preferences might be changing.
